Dr. Jenny Bisset, Founder of the Bisset Method

Following her 4-year masters program in California, Jenny traveled to China for a post-graduate internship through the Beijing School of Chinese Medicine.

Later while in private practice in San Carlos, CA she completed the Doctorate of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine to deepen her knowledge while gaining more experience in both pain management and women’s health. Jenny later added Functional Medicine to provide new treatment modalities for her patients. She enthusiastically continues her studies with many mentors to expand her skills in both Chinese and Functional Medicine.

Jenny practices a broad range of Traditional Chinese Medicine techniques including cupping, guasha, tuina, moxibustion as well as many styles of acupuncture: MicroAcupuncture MA48, The Balance Method, Master Tung, Kiiko Matsumoto, Muscle Channel Technique, BodyMapping, EXSTORE, electro-acupuncture and the NADA protocol to name a few, as well as herbal medicine and supplements.

She has developed her own practice called The Bisset Method which focuses on correcting the foundations of adrenal and gut health with a special focus on chronic skin conditions such as acne, eczema, psoriasis and hair loss, and uses personalized coaching to help patients succeed with their programs.

The Call To Healing

Jenny is a native Alaskan, raised in California by a family of educators and adventurers.

During high school, Jenny’s family took a position with the Peace Corps in Kabul, Afghanistan. It was this extraordinary experience that instilled Jenny’s interest in service as she witnessed a country plagued by poverty with limited or no access to adequate nutrition or medical care. During her three years in the country, she cultivated deep compassion and a genuine desire to help.

After college Jenny visited her family during a second Peace Corps tour in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which coincided with the surge of Boat People leaving Vietnam, landing by the tens of thousands on the shores of Malaysia. Jenny took a job assisting with the resettlement of the refugees. During this time the “Médecins Sans Frontières” (Doctors Without Borders) anchored a hospital ship offshore the island where she was working. During the days Jenny did her refugee work, interviewing and reuniting families and hearing the devastating tales of their harrowing journeys; at night she helped on the hospital ship as an untrained aid to doctors assisting with everything from a cholera outbreak to childbirths. The gratification of helping people was profound and set Jenny’s future course to pursue service in the form of medicine.

Later, after suffering 10 years of back pain, stress, GI issues, frequent infections and panic attacks, and having tried unsuccessfully every type of conventional treatment, Jenny was referred to an acupuncturist (uncommon in those early days) and her chronic pain was cured in 2 treatments.

This felt like a mysterious miracle and opened her to the idea of a mind-body connection.

Later she had another deeply successful experience with acupuncture to help resolve some long-standing grief and stress. The dots had started to connect. She then realized what form of medicine her service would take, although raising 2 kids and 2 step-kids and running an interior design business meant she would have to wait a few years. Eventually, these experiences with acupuncture led her to pursue her Masters of Traditional Chinese Medicine, begin a private practice, and later complete her Doctorate in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.

From her own personal experience and in her practice, Jenny learned that stressful, toxic lifestyles and poor nutrition (such as the Standard American Diet) are at the root of most health complaints. She studied more in these areas and started dabbling in functional lab tests. She noticed how many people had “normal” labs but did not feel normal, and decided to dive deeper into the world of functional medicine to learn how to detect upstream causes that are present before diseases take hold.

She learned how to run more advanced tests, and read standard labs differently to find early clues and missed opportunities that could change the course of a disease, or prevent it entirely. She realized that in fact, both Chinese and Functional medicine were the same root cause, natural medicines, just using different tools and techniques, and that together they were more powerful than either one alone. She committed to fusing the two medicines to offer a broader perspective, more modalities, and better outcomes.

Along with personalized coaching to help patients through the process, The Bisset Method was born.

Jenny’s mission and purpose is to connect with each patient’s story and desire for life fulfillment, so they can heal their bodies and enjoy a rich, active and joyful healthspan. She believes in the innate healing power of the body, given the right circumstances, and strives to do everything possible to assist in that process.

Jenny loves to spend her down time with her cats and a cup of tea, reading endlessly on her favorite subjects: Chinese and Functional Medicine! She also loves hiking in the nearby open space, sharing healthy meals with family and friends, or puttering around her sunny garden. She continues her love of travel which challenges and revives her spirit. She spends as much time as possible with her beautiful grown children and grandbabies, which is a whole new journey!
